Review Station!

Guardians of the Galaxy #1

Welcome to the weekend edition of The Review Station, everyone! I hope you all are enjoying a restful, enjoyable Super Bowl weekend with some friends and family! Today, I’ll be going over the new launch of the Guardians of the Galaxy. I won’t lie to you, this is the first time I’ve actually read the comic books, however they are my favorite Marvel movie franchise by far. Once I learned that they were doing a new series launch, I knew I wanted to be on board as soon as it was released. Thankfully, it did not disappoint. As for today’s review, here are my thoughts:

Cover–  As I’ve mentioned before, these tend to be my favorite types of covers. Any time when we get a full team profile, the characters in their battle poses, I’m all for it, as it adds gravity and a feeling of awe to the artwork. David Marquez and Dean White slay it here as Star-Lord looks amazing up front and center wielding his dual guns while his new band of cohorts look equally imposing standing behind him. The cosmos bleed into the characters from behind and fan-favorite Groot stands behind, overshadowing them all. It is a gorgeous cover and immediately grabs your attention.

Artwork– Geoff Shaw does great work within these pages and his detailed artwork make it pleasing to the eye. There are several scenes which take up large portions of the page, and each are drawn with care, pulling the reader into every moment. There’s plenty of color and flair throughout, and I hope he remains on board for future installments.

Story– The story arc kicks off to an explosive start as we are teased with a new Thanos, a mole of sorts within the universes most powerful minds and bodies. The search for his successor will be an exciting one, and hopefully it will pay off with a strong conclusion. There’s plenty of humor and action here, along with one of the coolest title introductions I’ve read in quite some time. The story feels very much like what we’re used to expecting from the cult-favorite band of misfits ,with a welcome dash of the unexpected given the circumstances that bring the new team together.

Overall- (10/10) Donny Cates has started this series off on the right foot, and this appears to be a strong start for the promising new Guardians. I, for one, am looking forward to future installments from the team!
